چکیده

We present upper bounds on the size of codes that are locally testable by querying only two input symbols. For linear codes, we show that any 2-locally testable code with minimal distance δn over any finite field F cannot have more than |F| codewords. This result holds even for testers with two-sided error. For general (non-linear) codes we obtain the exact same bounds on the code size as a function of the minimal distance, but our bounds apply only for binary alphabets and one-sided error testers (i.e. with perfect completeness). Our bounds are obtained by examining the graph induced by the set of possible pairs of queries made by a codeword tester on a given code. We also demonstrate the tightness of our upper bounds and the essential role of certain parameters.

Improved Lower Bounds for Locally Decodable Codes and Private Information Retrieval

We prove new lower bounds for locally decodable codes and private information retrieval. We show that a 2-query LDC encoding n-bit strings over an l-bit alphabet, where the decoder only uses b bits of each queried position of the codeword, needs code length

A New Chase-type Soft-decision Decoding Algorithm for Reed-Solomon Codes

This paper addresses three relevant issues arising in designing Chase-type algorithms for ReedSolomon codes: 1) how to choose the set of testing patterns; 2) given the set of testing patterns, what is the optimal testing order in the sense that the most-likely codeword is expected to appear earlier; and 3) how to identify the most-likely codeword. A new Chase-type soft-decision decoding algorit...

Local Testing for Membership in Lattices

Testing membership in lattices is of practical relevance, with applications to integer programming, error detection in lattice-based communication and cryptography. In this work, we initiate a systematic study of local testing for membership in lattices, complementing and building upon the extensive body of work on locally testable codes. In particular, we formally define the notion of local te...

Relaxed Locally Correctable Codes

Locally decodable codes (LDCs) and locally correctable codes (LCCs) are error-correcting codes in which individual bits of the message and codeword, respectively, can be recovered by querying only few bits from a noisy codeword. These codes have found numerous applications both in theory and in practice. A natural relaxation of LDCs, introduced by Ben-Sasson et al. (SICOMP, 2006), allows the de...

Lower Bounds for 2-Query LCCs over Large Alphabet

A locally correctable code (LCC) is an error correcting code that allows correction of any arbitrary coordinate of a corrupted codeword by querying only a few coordinates. We show that any 2query locally correctable code C : {0, 1} → Σ that can correct a constant fraction of corrupted symbols must have n > exp(k/ log |Σ|) under the assumption that the LCC is zero-error. We say that an LCC is ze...
